To the Woman Who Doesn't Know Where She Stands with God
"Is God real?" "Who is Jesus." "If God is real, where do I stand with God?"
Do you find yourself asking these questions?
I have been there.
I remember sitting in a high school FCA meeting and our speaker declaring that she knew with full confidence her eternal standing and unity with God. She knew that when she died, she would be in perpetuity looking into the face of the Creator. As she spoke, I wondered how she knew this, how did she have such assurance?
As a member of FCA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, you would think I too would know where I stood with God, but I didn't. I would define my "Christianity" as believing that there was a God, very abstract, but not knowing much else. I didn't attend a church, and I didn't read the Word. I knew some isolated Bible stories from attending sabbath school as a young child, but that was it.
In college, I took a brief interest in the Bahá’í Faith. In short, this belief system believes that all world faiths are the foundation of the one God. All faiths are true and valid. The Bahá’í Faith was a feel-good belief for the lost college student I was.
It was several years later, years of struggling with an eating disorder and having little self-worth, that I finally found Jesus and with that, my assurance in where I stand with God.
So, I want to help you, if you are struggling to know where you stand with God.
The Truth about God
He is the supreme Creator and Ruler, eternal, always existing as the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The Bible is his living Word, written by humans under the supernatural direction of the Holy Spirit. It is the ultimate source of truth for Christian beliefs and living.
The certainty of now and forever with God provides hope and peace beyond understanding, and you can have that.
The Truth about You
Contrary to what the world says about you, let me tell the truth.
God created you,
in his image;
He knew you even before you began to grow in your mother's womb.
Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. - Genesis 1:26-27
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. - Psalms 139:13
“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” - Jeremiah 1:5
Not only did God create you, but you were created intentionally and uniquely, loved fiercely by God.
Give thanks to the God of heaven. His faithful love endures forever. - Psalms 136:26
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. - Ephesians 2:10
The Truth about Sin
Humanity has always had its own standards of social righteousness. However, these are often contradictory to biblical righteousness. Spiritual values can easily get mixed up in even seemingly innocuous behaviors.
What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil, that dark is light and light is dark, that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter. - Isaiah 5:20
The fact is that we are all sinners because we are all descendants of Adam and Eve, who ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which sounds harmless enough, except that it was in direct disobedience of God. Thus, we all are subject to sin, and this sin separates us from God and causes many difficulties in life.
All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all. - Isaiah 53:6
Listen! The Lord ’s arm is not too weak to save you, nor is his ear too deaf to hear you call. It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, he has turned away and will not listen anymore. - Isaiah 59:1-2
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. - Romans 3:23
You and I, we are all sinners. And because we are sinners, we need a savior.
The Truth about Our Savior
In the darkness of a sinful, fallen world, there is hope. God had a plan in motion from the beginning, and it's his son Jesus Christ.
Jesus lived on earth as a man and lived a spotless, sinless life. He offered himself freely as a perfect sacrifice just in the hope that you or I or anyone would believe in him.
“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” - Matthew 1:23
In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. - John 1:1-5
So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. - Hebrews 4:14
Jesus conquered death and arose resurrected after three days thus showing his authority over sin and death. The sacrifice Jesus made on the cross was for your salvation if you chose to believe and follow him.
The Good News is about his Son. In his earthly life he was born into King David’s family line, and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord. - Romans 1:3-4
I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said. - 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. - Colossians 2:9-10
One day, Jesus will return, and he will reign as King forever.
After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him. As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!” - Acts of the Apostles 1:9-11
. . . that you obey this command without wavering. Then no one can find fault with you from now until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. For, At just the right time Christ will be revealed from heaven by the blessed and only almighty God, the King of all kings and Lord of all lords. - 1 Timothy 6-14-15
The Truth about Salvation
The sacrifice Jesus made on the cross was for your salvation if you chose to believe and follow him.
We have a Christ-shaped hole in our hearts that
nothing, nothing, NOTHING
in this world can ever fill, not money, health, beauty, fame, possessions, pleasure, status, knowledge, or relationships.
Nothing can fill the void except Christ. The Holy Spirit is here on earth and makes us aware of our need for Jesus. This is the core of the human condition.
C.S. Lewis stated,
“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”
The other world is eternity with God in heaven. You can have this, salvation and reconciliation are the free gifts of grace, this is the good news.
We can never do enough good works to make up for our sin; only when we put our trust and faith in Christ Jesus are we saved and our sins forgiven. It doesn't matter what you have done, who you were, where you have been, Jesus died so that anyone, including you, who calls on His name will be saved!
Jesus is pursuing you; he will continually seek you. You aren't lost, you are loved, and he is calling you home.
God's free grace LITERALLY (not figuratively) revives you! Without Jesus, you are spiritually dead, but Jesus is LIFE, and through Him, you have new life.
Friend, revived through grace is the gospel of Jesus Christ. This revival is life-giving and the most significant most crucial choice any of us will ever make.
Do I sound dramatic?
